Oregon State offense vs. Stanford defense

Though Stanford gave up seven points and held Washington State to 245 yards last week, the defensive numbers remain abysmal. The Cardinal give up an average of 34.1 points and 440.7 yards per game. Where Stanford is most vulnerable is defending the pass, as it yields 360.6 yards per game, worst in the Pac-12. Also worst in the conference: third-down defense, with opponents converting to first down at a 51.2% clip. Stanford’s run defense is respectable, giving up 121.7 yards a game. The leaders of the Cardinal defense are linebacker Gaethan Bernadel (team-high 59 tackles), cornerback Collin Wright (53 tackles, 5 for loss), edge David Bailey (5 sacks, 6 TFLs), and safety Scotty Edwards (2 interceptions).

Look for Oregon State’s receiving trio of Anthony Gould, Silas Bolden and tight end Jack Velling to capitalize on the Cardinal’s forgiving pass defense. Bolden has a career-high 40 receptions for 562 yards and four touchdowns, followed by Gould (32-538-2) and Velling (24-363-8). The Beavers average 249.2 passing yards per game. Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has passed for 2,014 yards and 18 touchdowns, but his completion percentage of 58.3% is a little light. Look for freshman quarterback Aidan Chiles to play the third series of the game, as has become custom. He’s appeared the past five games, leading OSU to the end zone three times, plus a field goal. Running back Damien Martinez is 122 yards short of his first 1,000-yard season. The sophomore has 10 100-yard games. Deshaun Fenwick continues to be an important part of the Beavers’ running game, as he’s rushed for 436 yards and four touchdowns.

Oregon State defense vs. Stanford offense

The Cardinal managed only 217 yards a week ago at Washington State, but they’re capable of explosive games. Stanford had performances of 46 points and 523 yards against Colorado and 35 points and 495 yards against Washington. Stanford is more effective through the air, as it averages 239 yards a game, while rushing for 127 yards. Quarterback Ashton Daniels had had plenty of highs and lows this season. All totaled, Daniels is 148 of 249 for 1,707 yards and nine touchdowns. He’s also a capable runner, with 77 carries for 187 yards and two scores. Stanford’s top running back is former Lake Oswego High star Casey Filkins, but he missed last Saturday’s game at WSU with an injury. The Cardinal have two prominent receiving threats in Elic Ayomanor and Benjamin Yurosek. Ayomayor has 49 catches for 790 yards and five touchdowns, while Yurosek, a tight end, hasn’t done much since a nine-catch, 135-yard performance vs. Hawaii.

Oregon State ranks fourth among conference teams in total defense, giving up 334.1 yards a game. The Beavers are among the country’s top 20 in run defense, and top 10 in sacks. Linebacker Easton Mascarenas-Arnold is OSU’s top tackler by a wide margin with 83, including five for losses. His brother, safety Akili Arnold, is second with 51 tackles. Outside linebacker Andrew Chatfield has a team-high seven sacks, three coming last Saturday at Colorado. Sione Lolohea leads the Beavers with 8½ tackles for loss. The Arnolds have two interceptions each.

Quick notables

Oregon State clinched a winning season last Saturday at Colorado. The Beavers have three consecutive winning seasons, their longest streak since 2006-09.

OSU has an eight-game home winning streak, the school’s longest since 2007-08. It is the seventh-longest streak nationally.

This has been a streaky series. The Beavers have won the past two games against the Cardinal, which had an 11-game winning streak over OSU before that.

Smith, as OSU’s quarterback in 1999, threw for a series-high 405 yards against Stanford.

Oregon State kicker Atticus Sappington is 11 of 12 on field goal attempts.

Within a span of three games, Stanford won road games by scores of 46-43 and 10-7.

Stanford is 0-5 against Pac-12 teams with winning records, losing by a collective score of 203-76.

Center Levi Rogers is the only Cardinal on offense to start all nine games this season.

Oregon State 45, Stanford 17
