The No. 15 Beavers lead start to finish to win their sixth game of the season and become bowl eligible
Here is what was written locally and Southern California from the aftermath of Oregon State’s 36-24 win over UCLA on Saturday night at Reser Stadium:
LA Times: “For the first time this season, the Bruins’ defense bent a bit, giving up multiple touchdowns to an opposing offense. Twice, UCLA blew coverages on Oregon State tight end Jack Velling that resulted in touchdowns, including a 32-yard score that gave the Beavers a 36-17 lead late in the third quarter.”
Orange County Register: “When you lose the turnover battle you’re going to lose the game,” said UCLA coach Chip Kelly.
Daily Bruin: “Freshman Dante Moore does not have much history with the Bruins. Yet history continues to repeat itself for the young quarterback, just not in a way that aids him or his team.”
Ken Goe, The Oregonian: “And if the Beavers’ defense doesn’t buckle down, it’s difficult to see OSU playing on even terms with either Oregon or Washington. Oregon State’s six victories make for a nice first half of the season. On paper. But OSU’s loss was to Washington State in Pullman. On Saturday, Arizona blew out WSU 44-6. Yikes.”
The Oregonian/OregonLive: “Cooper and Robinson, whose absences were noticeable a week ago when unheralded California dropped 40 on Oregon State, gave the Beavers a significant lift. Who knows, in fact, how Saturday’s game might have turned out had it not been for Cooper’s 67-yard pick six just before halftime?”
BruinReport: “Simply put, the three interceptions were the difference in the game. UCLA can not expect to win games consistently giving the ball away, especially when those turnovers result in touchdowns. While the defense was also a problem today, it is hard to expect pure stops when the offense gives the Beavers the ball in UCLA’s territory. The Bruins need Dante Moore to protect the ball much better if they want to win games against good teams.”
Statesman-Journal: “Five takeaways from Oregon State’s win over UCLA.”
Daily Barometer: “The Beavers will likely see a favorable jump in the AP poll with USC, Oregon, and Louisville losing.”
