UCLA dropped their second game of the season this weekend, as they were taken down by the Oregon State Beavers 36-24. It was a frustrating game for the Bruins, and they looked like a different team than we’ve seen.

The defense struggled to contain the Oregon State offense, and it hurt them. UCLA allowed multiple big plays down the field, and it ended up costing them the victory.

“The biggest issue was big plays, Oregon State piling up too many because of blown coverages. Beavers quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei looked every bit like the five-star prospect he was purported to be coming out of St. John Bosco High, throwing for 266 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.”

Per Ben Bolch of The LA Times

The Bruins showed some vulnerability for the first time this season, and they couldn’t recover with the offense struggling as well. It was a poor effort all around from UCLA and not the standard that they have shown they can play this year.

Head coach Chip Kelly was short and to the point in his analysis of the game.

“There were too many deep balls today,” Kelly said.

For the Bruins to allow these types of plays, it was always going to bury them. They were already at a disadvantage being on the road, so the play of the defense didn’t help anything.

However, the Bruins now get a chance to redeem themselves this coming weekend. They head up to Northern California for a matchup with the Stanford Cardinal, and they will need to make sure that they play much better.

Stanford isn’t a team to take lightly; they will give the Bruins all they can handle. But if UCLA shows up and limits the turnovers in this one, they should be able to come away with the victory.
