A familiar face will be helping lead the new regime in Corvallis.
On Wednesday, Oregon State announced that Inoke Breckterfield will be joining JaMarcus Shephard’s staff as a defensive line coach.
Oregon State football fans likely remember the name, as Breckterfield played for the Beavers in the late 1990s and became one of the most feared defensive ends in the Pac-10.
“I see it as an honor and a privilege to have Inoke Breckterfield join our staff at Oregon State University,” Shephard said in a news release shared by the school. “He stands as the pillar of what success looks like in terms of how you play the game at this university, He has the ability to recruit, develop and inspire young men across college football and has been that pillar of success at the various programs he has been at in his career.”
Breckterfield was a first team All-Pac-10 and a third-team All-American selection in 1998, helping lead the Beavers to a spot in the Hula Bowl. He was also given the Morris Trophy, given to the conference’s top defensive lineman.
After his time in Corvallis, Breckterfield had 19.5 sacks and 55.5 tackles for loss. He was Oregon State’s career leader in both categories at the time.
After college, Breckterfield played professionally for the Toronto Argonauts (1999-2000) and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2001-03).
After his playing career ended, Breckterfield stayed in Corvallis as a volunteer assistant coach and as a graduate assistant from 2006 to 2008.
Since then, he’s been a defensive lines coach at multiple schools, including Weber State, Montana, UCLA, Pittsburgh, Wisconsin, Vanderbilt and Washington (including the year the Huskies played in the national championship game).
He’s been coaching the defensive line at Baylor for the past two years.
