OSU football: Beavers’ season hits a new low in loss at Air Force

The Oregon State football team suffers its fifth straight defeat with a loss at Air Force

[[{“value”:”

Playing without starting quarterback Ben Gulbranson, Oregon State was shut out in a 28-0 loss at Air Force on Saturday afternoon.

It is the fifth straight loss for the Beavers. With a record of 4-6 the team would need victories over Top 25 opponents Washington State and Boise State the next two weeks to extend its bowl streak.

Gulbranson did not make the trip with the team for the game due to an injury suffered this week. In their media appearances earlier this week, both coach Trent Bray and offensive coordinator Ryan Gunderson expected Gulbranson to make his second start of the season against the Falcons.

With Gulbranson unavailable, the Beavers started Gevani McCoy, who had been the team’s starter earlier in the season. After the offense got off to a slow start Saturday, the coaching staff turned to Gabarri Johnson.

He and McCoy both played over the remainder of the first half, but neither could put together a sustained drive. After halftime, Johnson played the rest of the way.

No matter who was under center, Oregon State could not get its running game going. The Beavers were held to 69 total rushing yards and averaged just 2.9 yards per attempt.

The passing game was equally unproductive as Johnson completed 9 of 19 attempts for 106 yards and an interception. McCoy did not complete either of his attempts.

It was an entirely different story for the Air Force offense, which ran its triple-option attack almost flawlessly.

The Falcons (3-7) ran the ball 66 times for 270 yards. Air Force didn’t throw the ball often, but was extremely efficient. Quarterback Quentin Hayes was 5 for 5 for 110 yards and no interceptions. He also caught a pass from wide receiver Brandon Engel for 29 yards on a trick play in the first half.

The end result was a dominating performance for the Falcons, who have won two in a row after losing seven straight.

Oregon State will host Pac-12 Conference rival Washington State at 4 p.m. next Saturday.
