WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump on Monday said that New Mexico should be renamed New America.
“New Mexico should immediately change its name to New America,” he wrote on TRUTH Social. “We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America! The name would add great value and prestige to the State! Home Values and Incomes would rise, and you would be even prouder while saluting our beautiful American Flag!”
Trump also added that New Mexico is known for corrupt elections.
“Maybe even the Crooked Elections, that New Mexico is known for, would become honest again!” his post concluded.
U.S. Democratic Sen. Ben Ray Lujan said New Mexico is keeping it’s name.
“New Mexico’s name dates back hundreds of years, long before the United States even existed,” he wrote on X. “It carries generations of history, culture, and rich traditions that continue to shape who we are. “We are New Mexicans. We’re proud of our name, proud of our home, and we’re keeping both. Long after Donald Trump is out of office, we’ll still be New Mexico.”
Earlier this month, Trump floated renaming both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans to “Trump Ocean” or “Ocean of the Americas.”
“We call it ‘Trump Ocean’ or ‘Ocean of the Americas,’ something like that,” Trump said during a rally in Tennessee. “Before I get out, I think we should have an ocean. And we need a great river.”
In August, Trump said he wanted to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” and got pushback from it. He signed an executive order stating the name change amid the trade fight with Canada.

“We’ve notified all the various people that we have to notify so we’ve done everything we had to do, and this is official, effective immediately,” Trump said.
