The Huskies escaped in extra time, ending OSU’s season.
A successful and thrilling season for Oregon State men’s soccer came to a bitter end Thursday night in Corvallis, as an extra-time goal by Washington eliminated the Beavers, 3-2, in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
The Huskies advanced to the second round with a golden goal in the 104th minute by Richie Aman, which he was able to flick past a host of OSU defenders as it deflected across the face of goal and in.
The Beavers finish 10-5-2 on the season with the loss.
OSU did lead in the early going: a fourth-minute strike from outside the box by Fran Cortijo made it 1-0.
Arnau Farnos, the West Coast Conference player of the year, crossed the ball to the edge of the box and found the left foot of Cortijo, who rifled it off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net.
Washington had the lion’s share of possession and chances for the remainder of the first half, out-shooting OSU 11-6 in the first 45. Aman picked up a yellow card in the 28th minute, but his team was able to threaten inside the box on several occasions.
John Nicolson picked up six first-half saves for OSU, which went into the break up 1-0.
The Huskies kept peppering the goal as the second half began, and they soon delivered the equalizer. A goal from Harrison Bertos in the 57th minute knotted things up in Corvallis.
OSU’s Pol Morlans was given a yellow card in the 66th minute.
A shot by OSU’s Tim Hoffman sailed just high in the 75th. In the 77th, a shot by Farnos appeared to be blocked by multiple Washington defenders.
Upon review, however, it was a hand ball on the Huskies inside the box. Farnos struck it home from the penalty spot to give OSU the 2-1 lead. It was his 15th goal of the season.
Nicolson made a leaping, one-handed save on a corner in the 83rd minute to preserve the Beavers’ advantage. Moments later, he had to leap again to parry away a long shot from UW that zipped on-target.
The Huskies finally broke through in the 85th minute on a header by Connor Lofy, tying things up, 2-2.
Neither team was able to manage a goal down the stretch of regulation, sending the game into two 10-minute periods of extra time. Any goal would immediately win it for either side.
Just over six minutes into extra time, Nee earned a free kick just outside the box for OSU. But the shot went wide. Neither team scored in the first 10-minute period.
The Huskies found the winner nearly four minutes into the second period of extra time, as Aman’s kick ended OSU’s season.
