Mitch Dahlen has worked under Kalen DeBoer at Fresno State, Washington and now Alabama, helping coach the quarterbacks.
Alabama assistant quarterbacks coach Mitch Dahlen is also headed to Oregon State.
Dahlen is expected to be hired as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach of the Beavers, sources with knowledge of the hire told AL.com on Sunday. The deal is not yet finalized, though.
He will work under JaMarcus Shephard, Alabama’s co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach who has been named Oregon State’s next coach.
Dahlen has worked with Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer all the way back to Fresno State. Dahlen then followed DeBoer to Washington and Alabama.
Over that time, Dahlen has helped coach Jake Haener at Fresno State, Michael Penix Jr. at Washington and Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson at Alabama. Three have been NFL Draft picks selected in the top four rounds, and Simpson is projected to be a first-round pick this year.
Dahlen is a former college quarterback himself, having spent time with Utah and Southern Utah. He’s from Oregon and is the son of a former Oregon State football player. Much of Dahlen’s family also attended the schoo
Dahlen has been working alongside Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb and co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Nick Sheridan this season to coach up the Alabama quarterbacks.
Dahlen is expected to stay with Alabama through at least the SEC Championship Game on Saturday.
Also, according to reports, other Alabama staffers who are expected to follow Shephard to Oregon State are associate director of player personnel Eron Hodges and assistant wide receivers coach Torrey Gill. Hodges would be general manager and Gill the receivers coach for the Beavers.
