Oregon State AD Scott Barnes sets May 15 for return to duties

Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes is returning to work Monday, May 15, a little more than three weeks after suffering a serious cardiac event.

Barnes, OSU’s athletic director since 2017, returns to the office working half days for an undetermined period of time starting May 15. Barnes eventually plans to resume full-time duties.

Barnes, 60, experienced a medical emergency on Saturday, April 22, while attending an alumni awards event at Fresno State University. Barnes was being honored with the Top Dog Award, given to Fresno State alums who make significant contributions to society. Barnes played basketball at Fresno State from 1983-86.

Barnes spent five days receiving treatment and care at Saint Agnes Medical Center in Fresno. Barnes and his family returned to Corvallis last Friday.

During Barnes’ six-year tenure, he has been instrumental in raising the profile of OSU football. Barnes has hired several coaches who have made significant impact in their sport, including Jonathan Smith (football), Terry Boss (men’s soccer) and Mitch Canham (baseball). Barnes’ impact has been felt financially, as he led a $162 million drive to rebuild the west side of Reser Stadium, which will be complete in time for the 2023 season.
